A Word From The Owners

Hello Westglow friends and family!

We hope you’re enjoying great health this summer.

We have just returned from Zambia as part of a humanitarian
mission with Equality Now, an organization working to end
violence and discrimination against women and girls around the
world. We attended a conference with Gloria Steinem and
women from Africa who are creating safe houses to rehabilitate
victims. We also met several local tribal women while on safari in
lower Zambezi. These courageous women not only battle for their
own rights, but struggle with poverty, disease, and violence on a
daily basis. It truly was an experience we’ll never forget.

No matter how far we travel, we appreciate coming home to enjoy
summer in the cool Blue Ridge Mountains at Westglow. Many of
you celebrated July 4th with us at the first annual Westglow
Fireworks Extravaganza featuring a concert with Betty, a
spectacular fireworks show on the lawn, and a gourmet picnic.
Speaking of gourmet, we invite you and your friends to come to
Rowland’s Restaurant to experience our fabulous new summer
menu. Enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing
you soon!

To your health,

Learn To Manage Your Stress To
Manage Your Weight

Marla Gentile, M.Ed, Certified Personal Trainer,
Licensed Professional Counselor

Have you been trying hard to lose weight but feel frustrated and confused....Are you exercising and eating well but still fighting those extra pounds? Maybe your stress levels have something to do with your dilemma.

Cortisol is an important hormone in the body which is released by the adrenal gland. It has been coined the stress hormone because it is secreted in higher levels during periods of tension or anxiety. Although cortisol has positive effects on the body, unusually high and prolonged levels of cortisol (like those associated with chronic stress) has been shown to be related to increased abdominal fat. In order to decrease cortisol levels, the relaxation response must be activated.

These findings add to the significance of the mind/body connection. To reach our fitness goals, it is important to have both a strong and healthy body and a strong and healthy mind. Exercise and proper nutrition, although essential, is not enough. We must learn to manage our stress levels, create balance in our lives and focus on the concept of overall wellness.

Keep up your exercise routine. Maintain a healthy, sensible diet and learn to manage your stress. You may begin to see a difference.
