Have you been trying hard to lose weight but feel frustrated
and confused....Are you exercising and eating well but still fighting
those extra pounds? Maybe your stress levels have something to
do with your dilemma.
Cortisol is an important hormone in the body which is released
by the adrenal gland. It has been coined the stress hormone
because it is secreted in higher levels during periods of tension
or anxiety. Although cortisol has positive effects on the body,
unusually high and prolonged levels of cortisol (like those
associated with chronic stress) has been shown to be related
to increased abdominal fat. In order to decrease cortisol levels,
the relaxation response must be activated.
These findings add to the significance of the mind/body connection.
To reach our fitness goals, it is important to have both a strong and
healthy body and a strong and healthy mind. Exercise and proper
nutrition, although essential, is not enough. We must learn to
manage our stress levels, create balance in our lives and focus
on the concept of overall wellness.
Keep up your exercise routine. Maintain a healthy, sensible
diet and learn to manage your stress. You may begin to see
a difference. |
